How to Apply Your Stencil with Stencil-Prep®
Josh JensenHow it works. Stencil-Prep® neutralizes the skin's pH. That activates the methyl violet dye in the printed stencil, so it dyes the outer skin cells instead of resting on the surface. The result is a vivid line that stays until the skin naturally sheds, or the stencil is intentionally removed with an alcohol-based solution.
About alternatives. While Stencil-Prep® was designed specifically for usage with InkJet Stencils®, there are other stencil application solutions available. While
Steps
- Clean and dry the skin. Shave if needed, then remove all oil, lotion and residue. Let it dry completely.
- Apply a thin, even coat of Stencil-Prep® and rub it in until slightly tacky, 1-2 minutes. If it is wet the lines can blur.
- Place the stencil face-down. Position it once. Sliding it smears the line.
- Press firmly and evenly across the whole stencil for 30 to 60 seconds. Make sure every part of the design touches skin, including over curves.
- Peel slowly and evenly from one edge.
-
Let it dry fully (typically 3-5 minutes) before you start tattooing.
Not happy with the placement? You can use rubbing alcohol to remove the stencil. Ensure dry before re-applying.
During the session. Do not wipe the skin with green soap, or other mixtures that contain alcohol, as they will degrade the stencil (in addition to being a potential irritant). Many artists report using distilled water, witch hazel, or Dr Brommer's soap.
